Interesting potential for bringing new recruits to the world of comics, or marketing gimmick that cheapens the form?

I think TV shows are just following the lead of movies which have already tried these marketing techniques (gimmicks) - I seem to remember "Hellboy" having an extended back story laid out in comic form that you could access from the movie's main page, and I also remember "The Grudge" having a game (in comic form) where the evil Japanese spirit chases you around the haunted house. I accept this more than I do the cellphone idea.
